Kitesurfing has a small but genuine following in Phuket, dependent on wind conditions rather than being available reliably year-round.
When the wind is consistent enough
The green-season monsoon months (roughly May–October) bring the most reliable wind for kitesurfing, similar timing to the island's modest surf season covered in our surfing guide — the opposite of Phuket's calm, high-season conditions.
Where it's practiced
Open, less-crowded beaches with consistent onshore wind and enough space for kite lines are preferred over the busiest tourist beaches — specific spots shift somewhat with conditions, so checking with a local kite school for current recommended beaches is more reliable than a fixed location.
Lessons and certification
A handful of kitesurfing schools operate seasonally, offering everything from a first lesson to full certification (IKO or similar) — genuinely worth formal lessons rather than self-teaching, given the equipment's power and the real risk of being dragged by a poorly controlled kite.
Setting expectations
This is a seasonal, wind-dependent activity rather than something to plan a whole trip around outside the right months — worth checking current conditions and school availability before counting on it.
