Tipping in Thailand is less rigid than in the US, but a handful of Phuket-specific norms are worth knowing.
Restaurants
A service charge is often already added at nicer restaurants — check the bill before tipping further. At smaller local restaurants without a service charge, rounding up or leaving small change is appreciated but not strictly expected.
Hotels
Bellhops and housekeeping are commonly tipped a small amount per bag or per stay, more in line with international hotel norms than local Thai custom.
Tours & drivers
Tour guides, boat crews and private drivers are commonly tipped for a full-day trip, especially if service was genuinely good — this is one area where a modest tip is close to expected practice rather than optional.
Massage & spa
A small tip directly to the therapist, separate from the treatment price, is standard practice at most spas and massage shops.
