Accommodation
Hostels and budget guesthouses, concentrated in Patong's back streets and parts of Karon (see our hostels guide), keep accommodation costs well below resort pricing.
Food
Street food and local markets (see our street food guide) cost a fraction of restaurant dining and are genuinely some of the island's best food, not just the cheapest.
Getting around
Songthaews (shared pickup-truck taxis) running fixed routes cost far less than metered taxis or private transfers, though they're slower and less direct — a reasonable trade-off for budget travellers not in a hurry.
Activities
Public beaches are free, and a rented scooter (see our scooter guide) opens up independent exploring at a fraction of the cost of booking every day trip through a tour operator.
Where budget travel gets harder
Boat-based island tours (Phi Phi, Similan) are one of the few genuinely fixed costs that don't scale down much for budget travellers — shared group tours are the standard cost-saving move here rather than a private option.
