Coffee culture in Old Phuket Town

Where the island's café scene is concentrated, and why.

Old Phuket Town has become the island's clear centre of gravity for specialty coffee and café culture.

Why Old Town specifically

The area's restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses provide exactly the kind of characterful, photogenic interiors that independent cafés have built around — old tiled floors, airwells and heritage façades doing a lot of the design work already. See our architecture guide for the history behind these buildings.

What to expect

A mix of specialty coffee roasters, traditional "kopi" style coffee shops serving old-school Hainanese-style coffee, and dessert cafés serving local specialities like o-aew (a Phuket shaved-ice dessert) alongside espresso drinks.

Working from a café

Several of these cafés have good Wi-Fi and enough seating turnover tolerance for a longer working session — see our quiet spaces guide for more on this.

Best time to go

Weekday mornings are noticeably quieter than weekends, when the Sunday Walking Street market draws much larger crowds through the same streets.
