Thai Buddhist ordination ceremonies

The temporary monkhood tradition you may see being celebrated locally.

Temporary ordination into the monkhood is a significant life event in Thai Buddhist culture, and visitors may encounter an ordination ceremony or its associated celebrations without immediately recognising what they're seeing.

The tradition of temporary ordination

Unlike lifelong monastic vows in some Buddhist traditions, it's common in Thailand for men to ordain temporarily — anywhere from a few days to several months — often before marriage or at another significant life point, earning merit for themselves and their family.

What the ceremony involves

A procession (sometimes elaborate, with music and family celebration) leading to the temple, followed by the formal ordination ritual itself — hair shaving, receiving robes, and vows administered by senior monks.

If you encounter one as a visitor

These are genuine family and community events, sometimes large and public — respectful observation from a distance is fine, but they're not staged for tourists, so the same photography and conduct etiquette covered in our etiquette guide applies.
